Good Afternoon....
Don't forget we have a teacher workday on Monday. I hope everyone enjoys their 3 day weekend.
Tonight -- Baucom Silent Auction -- I hope everyone can come out and support the PTA. Even if you don't play bingo be sure to stop by the auction. Our basket turned out fantastic. Thank you to Mrs. Beahm for organizing it and for everyone that donated towards it!

Next week we will be working on comparing texts. We will be reading two texts on the same topic and then comparing what we learned. We also be working on identifying text features such as captions, headings, bold faced words, etc....
Math
We are continuing to work on partners of numbers (ex. tell all the partners to make 10 or 6). This is an important skill because the students will use it when they are memorizing addition and subtraction facts. As a former 2nd and 3rd grade teacher memorizing those facts is essential for them to be successful in math.
I hope everyone has a great weekend and I hope to see you at the Bingo Night.

Good Morning....
Thank you to everyone who helped make this a special week for the kids. 100th day and Valentine's Day falling on the same week I know makes things hectic.
We are off next Monday and Tuesday. I look forward to meeting with those that are signed up for conferences on Tuesday.
Reading
We are working on retelling the main idea and key details of the stories we read. We are also working on writing facts about animals. We are working on spacing between our words when we write and trying to sound out our words.
Math
In math we are working on more and less. We are also working what numbers partner together to make 10 or 5.
I hope everyone has a good weekend. Keep encouraging hand washing as there is a lot going around.
February 7, 2020
Surprise.... I didn't really see a day off coming this week. I hope everyone is safe and your houses have power and no trees down. I was talking to several teachers and they have trees down.
In ELA we are working on retelling stories that we read. We will be identifying the main idea and key details of fiction and nonfiction stories. We are moving up how many high frequency words we are focusing on each week. We will have 6 words each week from now until the end of the year. This week's words are : is, of, many, how, so, where. They need to be able to read and write the words.
Math
We are starting a new math unit. Check out this letter with websites to help support the kids and it will help you to help them. https://tools4ncteachers.com/resources/0-kindergarten/parent-letters/cluster-5/c5-parent-letter.pdf
The kids are doing great on Dreambox. It is funny because it is tricking them into learning. They are so focused on earning points they don't even realize they are learning.

Don't forget to sign up for conferences. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b44a4aa22a57-conference2 Thank you to those who have signed up already.
Thank you to those who have passed along the Donor's Choose Grant. I'd love to get two new ipads for the class to use. I have 30 days to raise $244. If you wouldn't mind passing on the site. http://bit.ly/donorschoosemshunt
ELA
In reading we are beginning to look at the main idea of the stories we read and identifying the key details. We will be working also with identifying verbs.
We are reviewing this units high frequency words: come, me, with, my, you, what, are, now. They need to be able to read and write these words.
Yesterday when we were looking at the iStation data one area we noticed the kids were low in was vocabulary. It is important to explain "fancy" words with kids. Ex. using the word 'pitcher' when pouring something and then explaining there are two kinds of "pictures". Another area that was lower was listening comprehension. We can work on this by saying things one time vs many times. Saying the same thing many times teaches them to listen on the third time not the first time.
Math
We are finishing up the unit on shapes this week. The kids have done well with this unit. We will beginning next week basic addition and subtraction.
Social Studies
We will be finishing up a unit on maps. When you travel be sure to explain the names of the places you travel. This helps them in getting a good sense of geography.
Have a great weekend.

Math
We are continuing to work on shapes. We are working on knowing what shapes make other shapes (ex. 6 triangles make 1 hexagon). We are also working with solid shapes and recognizing the shapes in the world.
Social Studies
We are working on knowing our street, neighborhood, town, etc... When you travel make sure you start to mention the names of the towns, states, etc... This is how they become interested in geography.
Have a great weekend! We are celebrating my brother's 50th birthday this weekend! I feel like we were just kids celebrating my parents 50th birthdays and now we are celebrating him. 😊

Good Afternoon....
Thank you to those who supplied supplies for our events next week. I know the kids will love making bags for our specialist, cafeteria and office staff.
Don't forget to continue to read over break. We do our middle of year testing in January. It will show how much they have grown since the beginning of the year.
If you plan on leaving early for the holiday break, please let me know so I can make sure to send home your child's bag of fun holiday crafts and a parent gift.
Here are some important dates for next week:
December 6, 2019
I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving break! It was nice to spend time with my parents down at the beach. My dad is having a pretty serious heart procedure done on Tuesday. My sister is going for the procedure but if anything happens I will have to go too. I'll let you know.
ELA
In reading we are working on retelling stories we read. This week we focused on setting... where and when a story happens. Next week we will focus on the characters. It is important when you are reading fiction stories to ask about the setting, characters, and events. WIth nonfiction stories having them identify the main idea and key details is important.

Math
During 2nd quarter in math kids need to be able to count to 50 by ones and tens. About 1/2 of the kids could do it the do the other day when I tested them. We will continue to work on it in class. I hope everyone has a great weekend and hopefully I will see some of you at the Apex Parade.
November 15, 2019
Good Afternoon...
Fingers crossed our room is done with all the illness for a while! I know I have been miserable this week. Keep encouraging good hand washing and staying out of friends personal space.
We are continuing to work on asking and answering questions while we read. We will read the Little Red Hen this week and some turkey books. Some of the kids are still struggling with knowing what a question is or being able to put that question in a sentence. If you could work on this at home that would be awesome.
Vocabulary: admired, delicious, delight, doubt, fable, sigh
Math
We are moving to numbers over 10. We will be counting objects and grouping them into 10 and the extras. This is the beginning of understanding "teen" numbers. We want them to really understand that 12=10+2 not just it is 12 but rather why is it 12.
Science
The kids are enjoying our unit on Matter. This week we focused on popcorn and describing it. Next week we will be using our 5 senses to describe objects.
Have a great weekend.
November 1, 2019
Good Morning
I hope everyone had a terrific Halloween despite the storm. Thank you to everyone who contributed to the applesauce and for helping with all the cute costumes.
I sent home a 1/2 sheet regarding lunch on the field trip Friday. I need that 1/2 slip back by Tuesday if you plan to buy lunch on the field trip. The order for lunches is due 3 weeks prior to the trip. On Monday I will be sending home the field trip letter with all the information and the chance to sign up to volunteer.

Good Morning...
I hope everyone is doing well. Thank you to everyone who contributed to Ms. Pelnik's gift. I know she will love it. I put together a photo album for her too. It has been a blessing to have her in here for 1st quarter.
Letterland Parade is next Thursday. Come dressed in your letterland costume and if you'd like to watch you can come at 9:30.
No school next Friday!
ELA
In ELA next week we will be working with some fall themed books. We will work on retelling the stories.

We will continue to work on organizing numbers into tens frames.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!
October 18, 2019
Good Afternoon.
I hope everyone had a great week.
Don't forget Friday is Mrs. Pelnik's last day. We will be giving her a large Land's End bag filled with supplies to start her new job as a Preschool teacher for Head Start in Asheville, NC. Thank you to those who have sent something in already.
Book Fair buying day.... Wednesday, October 23rd at 2:10. If you would like to come at that time to buy books with your student then check in at the office and meet us at the library. Also, you can buy at the PTA buying time Tuesday evening.

High Frequency Words: we will be reviewing the words we've studied so far (I, like, the and). At this point they should be able to recognize those words in print and write the words in sentences.
We have finished introducing all the letters in the alphabet. We are beginning blending letters to CVC read words (consonant, vowel, consonant). I'm still working on letter formation. Some are doing really well with using the lines on the paper correctly but others need more work.
We will be working on writing our first stories this week. It is so exciting to watch the writing process start.
Math
We are continuing to work on counting objects and then putting those objects into tens frames. We are also working on subtizing. Subtizing is the ability to look at a dice, domino or tens frame and just knowing the number. This really helps when kids are adding and subtracting. We enjoy playing a game called Tenzi in class. Check it out online. It is a fun game. Board games at this point are super important for kids. They help teach so many math skills.
I hope everyone has a great weekend.
October 11, 2019
Good Morning....
Thank you so much for all your donations for the Fun Run! I look forward to having some new technology equipment in my room. It is amazing how quickly things become out of date. Just as a reminder the Fun Run is at 1:00 today. If we raise a few more dollars per lap we can pass the other kindergarten rooms.
Thank you to those who have asked about Ms. Pelnik's going away gift. Just as a reminder I have bought a large Land's End tote bag and would like to fill it with school supplies (markers, sharpies, colored paper, books, etc...). She is hoping to get a job in Asheville at a Head Start Preschool. She will make good use of anything you donate.

Good Afternoon....
I hope everyone has had a great week! Don't forget Wednesday is Parent Conference Day. I'm doing 18 conferences in one day, so please be on time so we can fit them all in. Here is the schedule. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b44a4aa22a57-fall2
Thank you to everyone who has donated or signed up for Fun Run. It is a our one big fundraiser all year. We are in need of new computer equipment. I have 10 devices that are not updating any longer and are not supported anymore. Technology is frustrating because as things get faster, etc... we lose needed devices. We have earned Crazy Sock Day for the donations so far. Crazy Sock Day will be Tuesday.
Ms. Pelnik's (student teacher) last day is October 25th. I have purchased a large Land's End tote. I would love to fill it with school supplies or gift cards for her to start her career with. She is hoping to get a job with Head Start. She has been a great addition to our class and will be missed by me and the students. If you could send in a school supply or a gift card to get her off on the right start that would be amazing! Thank you so much!
Rainbow Words: Please send them in daily! We are testing when we have a chance and as the kids get to know the words.
Guest Reader: Don't miss your chance to be a guest reader. The kids love it. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b44a4aa22a57-guest4

I had a few minutes to sneak in time to write a newsletter so the newsletter is a day early. We've had a great week of learning. The children are getting use to the routine and are learning the rules and expectations of being a Baucom Aviator.
Picture Day -- Thursday, September 26th. The pictures must be bought prior to them being taken if you want to purchase them. Everyone will get their picture taken because it is for the yearbook.

High Frequency Word: I
Vocabulary: cranes, crew, gleaming, mechanic, outlining, solid

I hope everyone has a great weekend. Sounds like they have a fun weekend planned....plays, soccer games, softball, etc....
September 9, 2019
Good Morning....
I'm so glad the storm hasn't been as bad as they thought. My parents live in Ocean Isle. They had a couple small trees fall and they don't have power, but it is so much better than last year during Florence.
Each week I will send a newsletter with the objectives we will be covering over the course of the week. I will send it via email and post it on my website in case it gets deleted and you are wondering about something.
OPEN HOUSE -- Is Tuesday from 6:30-8. You will be learning about what your child will be doing in kindergarten and how you can support them at home. This is fan adult event.
Over the next week or two I will be signing your child up for various websites that encourage learning at home and we will use them in class also. I will be sending home individual passcodes soon. I encourage you to use Raz-kids often. It is an amazing program that your child can read online at their level and then answer questions about their reading. It is an amazing program that the school has purchased for each child to use.
Please send in a change of clothes for your child if you haven't done so yet. Hopefully they won't need them but accidents happen all the time.
This year I am trying a new behavior management system. I have tweaked it slightly already. Instead of getting stamps on a card they will be earning tickets. They can have to owe tickets for not listening to warnings about correcting a behavior. They will earn 20 tickets to earn a prize.

- PJ day Friday -- have your student wear their favorite PJs for the school wide PJ day.
- Hibernation Box - we will be making a hibernation box for the first day of winter on Friday. Please send in a stuffed animal that can "hibernate" in the classroom until spring. It helps them realize how long a season is.
Word of the week: to
Math
During 2nd quarter in math kids need to be able to count to 50 by ones and tens. About 1/2 of the kids could do it the do the other day when I tested them. We will continue to work on it in class. To find out whether your student demonstrated counting to 50 will be on their interim that will go home next Friday.
I hope everyone has a great weekend and hopefully I will see some of you at the Apex Parade.

Good Afternoon...
Fingers crossed our room is done with all the illness for a while! I know I have been miserable this week. Keep encouraging good hand washing and staying out of friends personal space.
- Turkey in disguise due TUESDAY
- Field Trip Wednesday -- See note that was sent home today with details. We could still use at least one more volunteer for the trip. Email me if you can come.
- Marathon - Friday -- if you are running if you could wear your field trip shirt that would be great so we can catch them as they finish otherwise they blend in.

Good Afternoon...
I hope everyone has had a great week. Don't forget Monday is a workday and there will be no school. Here are few notes:
- If I write a note in your child's folder, please, sign the note so that I know you have seen it.
- Interim Reports - in your child's folder you will have your child's Mclass report. The Mclass data was taken on the staggered entry day. We will review the information more at our conferences. If you have not signed up for a conference here is the sign up. https://www.signupgenius.com/go/20f0b44a4aa22a57-fall2. For first quarter they will not get a regular interim as we have not had the children long enough to give a report of that information yet.
- Keeping hands to themselves: We have had this talk a lot during the week week. We have had several instances where it has caused huge issues. If you could talk to your child about the importance of keeping their hands to themselves. It is for the safety of your child and other children in the class. Thank you!
- I tested some of the children's rainbow words today since we are not here Monday. Please make sure they are in their backpacks nightly. We will practice and test sometimes on days other than Monday.

Don't forget you can use Raz-Kids for your child's nightly reading. It is an amazing program that the school paid for. Information on it was sent home at open house.

Reading
This week in reading we will be working on identifying and naming rhyming pairs. We will be working on the concepts of print. (Some examples are show me one word, show me one letter, show me the title page, show me the front cover, what is a period and question mark, etc.....).
